Further Details About the IELTS Test Structure​

The structure, challenges and time for each component of the IELTS test may vary depending on the test types. 

Listening

Timing:30 minutes

You will listen to 4 recordings of Native English Speakers and then answer questions related to the contents, as below:

Recording 1- Conversations between 2 speakers in the context of social needs.

Recording 2- A monologue set in the context of social needs.

Recording 3-A conversation between up to 4 speakers about education or training topics.

Recording 4- A monologue on an academic subject.

Reading

Timing:60 minutes

You will do a test consisting of 3 parts with 40 questions in total, covering from 10 to 11 questions types. There is a difference between the Reading components of IELTS General Training Test & IELTS Academic Test

IELTS General Training Test
Texts from social, academic and work contexts.

IELTS Academic Test
Advanced texts at an undergraduate or graduate level, from academic sources.

Writing

Timing:60 minutes

There is a difference between the writing components of IELTS General Training Test and IELTS Academic Test:

IELTS General Training Test
+ Task 1: Write a letter, 150 words, responding to a given situation (e.g. requesting information, explaining a situation…). Your writing style can be personal, semi-formal or formal.
+ Task 2: Write an essay about 250 words, responding to a point of view, argument or problem. Your writing style can be fairly personal or informal.

IELTS Academic Test
+ Task 1: Describe, summarize or explain the information presented by a table, diagram, chart in 150 words.
+ Task 2: Write a formal essay for about 250 words, responding to a point of view, argument or problem.

Speaking

Timing:11-14 minutes

This is a face to face interview between one examiner and one examinee, which isrecorded. The test includes 3 parts:

Part 1
Introductory questions usually about familiar topics including family, work and hobbies (4-5 minutes).

Part 2
You are shown a card with a topic. You have one minute to prepare and then speak on that given topic for two minutes. This is followed by a short follow-up question (3-4 minutes).

Part 3
Examinees will answer 4-5 questions related to the topic in part two, but they are required to give longer answers that include their opinion and an explanation to support it.
